Time Warner Cable Inc. said Wednesday it reached a deal with Viacom Inc. on carriage fees, avoiding a blackout of 19 cable channels including MTV and Comedy Central.
The two sides, citing disagreement over fee hikes, had threatened a damaging blackout at midnight Eastern time that would have cut off shows such as “SpongeBob SquarePants” and “The Colbert Report” to about 15.7 million subscribers.
Shortly after agreeing to extend a midnight deadline by an hour, Time Warner Cable spokesman Alex Dudley said the sides agreed on a new contract.
The handshake deal meant the channels will not go dark and a joint statement was expected within the hour, Dudley said.
Viacom had mounted an advertising onslaught warning customers of the possible blackout, taking out ads in major newspapers and Web sites from The New York Times and TVGuide.com featuring a tearful “Dora the Explorer” crying and clinging to her monkey pal, Boots.
“Why is Dora crying?” the ad read. “Tonight you will lose Nickelodeon and 18 other channels from your TV.” It then prompted people to call their cable company to complain.
The dispute would have affected some 13.3 million Time Warner Cable subscribers, mainly in New York state, the Carolinas, Ohio, Southern California and Texas; and 2.4 million customres of Bright House Networks in Michigan, Indiana, California, Alabama and Florida.
Time Warner Chief Executive Glenn Britt on Wednesday had called Viacom’s demand for a 12 percent increase in fees — an extra million on top of the estimated 0 million it pays Viacom annually — extortion and outrageous given the recession. Viacom countered that the requested increase amounted to an extra .76 annually per subscriber.
Details of the deal were not immediately available.
Viacom had argued that Americans spend a fifth of their TV time watching Viacom shows but its fees made up less than 2.5 percent of the Time Warner cable bill.
Spokeswoman Kelly McAndrew said that despite ranking high in the ratings, Viacom’s cable networks’ average daily license fee was 65 percent lower than that of networks run by The Walt Disney Co., News Corp.’s Fox, Time Warner Inc.’s Turner Broadcasting System and Discovery Communications Inc.
Analyst Michael Nathanson with Bernstein Research said Viacom’s channels had been “underpriced relative to their peers.”
Public carriage fee disputes of this scale between a programmer and a cable operator are not that common, especially when there’s a threat of a blackout, said Derek Baine, senior analyst at SNL Kagan in Monterey, Calif. Typically, both sides agree on contract extensions as they negotiate on terms, he said, and any blackouts don’t last long because TV operators get calls from outraged customers.
One prominent carriage fee fight in recent years was in 2004, between Viacom and EchoStar, the former name of Dish Network Corp. Shows were dropped for two days.
In October, Time Warner Cable wrestled with LIN TV Corp., which operates local TV stations affiliated with NBC, CBS, Fox and CW. But this time, Time Warner Cable faced Viacom, the largest cable programmer, not a small independent with a handful of channels.
The channels in the dispute were Comedy Central, Logo, Palladia, MTV, MTV 2, MTV Hits, MTV Jams, MTV Tr3s, Nickelodeon, Noggin, Nick 2, Nicktoons, Spike, The N, TV Land, VH1, VH1 Classic, VH1 Soul and CMT: Pure Country.
Viacom shares rose 88 cents, or 4.5 percent, to close at .12 on Wednesday, while Time Warner Cable shares fell 31 cents, or 1.4 percent, to .45.
There’s something about a man in uniform the Kardashians can’t seem to resist. Khloe confirms she’s seeing Minnesota Timberwolves guard Rashad McCants. Sister Kim’s beau, Reggie Bush, "introduced us back in July and we have been dating ever since." wtf random
Background on Rashad: He played for UNC back when they won the 2005 championship. I was a sophomore at the time and although i didnt know him personally, he seemed like a huge douchebag…pretty damn arrogant.
The ~best~ players on the team at the time used to play on the basketball court outside my dorm room sometimes and i felt stupid because i was like ~omg~. i grew out of that pretty fast.

Musical film Mamma Mia! has become the UK’s biggest-selling DVD of all time, according to official figures.
It is the first disc to sell more than five million copies - placing it in one in four UK households.
The Abba-themed movie was the number one DVD of 2008, with its closest rival The Dark Knight making 1.5m sales.
The Official Charts Company’s (OCC) all-time DVD list of the last decade sees Mamma Mia! surge ahead of previous top seller Pirates of the Caribbean.
The Curse of The Black Pearl has sold 4.7 million copies, followed in the third and fourth place by Lord of The Rings: Fellowship of The Ring and The Two Towers.
Other top 10 DVD releases of the last 10 years include Bond adventure Casino Royale, The Shawshank Redemption and Gladiator.
Shrek 2 comes in at number 10 and is the best-selling animation DVD during the last decade.
Some 12 titles have each sold in excess of three million copies since 1998, when the DVD format was launched in the UK.
Mamma Mia! became the fastest-selling DVD when it was released in mid-November, and has continued to sell over the festive period.
Martin Talbot, managing director of the OCC, said: “Right from its release, Mamma Mia! has been a record breaker.
“This latest landmark further underlines the popularity of the movie, which is now officially the British public’s favourite DVD of all time,” he added.
Other releases linked to the film have proved successful, with its soundtrack becoming the biggest-selling compilation of 2008, shifting one million copies.

Shia LaBeouf’s left hand was so messed up after he flipped his truck, the hand somehow became hip — literally.
After his 1975 Checker Marathon wouldn’t start yesterday he bypassed AAA and hit up the paps for help — and while they worked on the car, the star showed off his surgery scars and explained how they rebuilt his hand with bone from his hip!
Shia smashed his car back in July. Though he was drinking and driving at the time, DUI charges were dropped.

While a veritable media frenzy was sparked in the aftermath of an article published by New York Magazine about Madonna having gotten a volumetric face lift that was achieved with fat grafting and how it represents a new era of facelifts, Make Me Heal and some industry insiders are yawning. Why? Because we already reported the Madonna news over a year ago and this plastic surgery trend of volumetric facelifts dates back nearly a decade.
1. Madonna – Although many have come down on the Material Girl for having plastic surgery, Make Me Heal applauds her for once again setting a trend. Madonna’s new facelift is the new standard for plastic surgery. In the past, Madonna has also used laser treatments, Botox injections, and possible eyelid surgery and breast augmentation. (See Make Me Heal’s story on Madonna’s facelift).

2. Brad Pitt — Always handsome, fatherhood wrought havoc on Brad’s boyish good looks. Luckily, he had a talented plastic surgeon give him a plastic surgery makeover involving a chemical or laser peel and some dermal fillers, like Restylane and Juvederm to fill in some wrinkles. Dr. Walden says, “His skin is shinier and there are fewer wrinkles on his face, which indicates he had a resurfacing procedure, like a laser called Fraxel or a chemical peel. It also looks like he’s had soft-tissue fillers, like Restylane or Juvéderm, injected into his wrinkles.”
“He has more volume to his face, specifically his laugh lines and under-eye cheek area,” says Dr. Walden. “And he has even more tone to his skin.”

3. Megan Fox — After being on our list for both Best Breast Implants and Best Nose Jobs, there was no way we could leave the stunning young beauty off our Best List. After having a nose job to remove a bump on her nose that was her only imperfection and getting lip fillers, Megan Fox is amongst Hollywood’s hottest, and her possible breast augmentation only enhances her flawless figure.

4. Tom Cruise — Since being a Top Gun, Tom Cruise has become a member of Hollywood’s best plastic surgery club. Over the years, he likely had a rhinoplasty to help soften the appearance of his strong nose and may even dabble in Botox injections to help maintain his youthful appearance. Before you see him in his new film Valkyrie, rent one of his old hits and compare his old nose to his new one.

5. Helen Mirren — Helen Mirren stunned fans on both sides of the pond when she was caught wearing a bikini. Make Me Heal suspects that Helen has remained so good looking thanks to some gradual plastic surgery over the years, including a facelift and necklift and maybe eyelid surgery as well.
6. Blake Lively — Before being a Gossip Girl, leggy blonde Blake had a rhinoplasty to get rid of her bumpy nose. We think the job was as well as done as her acting on the hit show.

7. Zac Efron — Zac has become the teenage fantasy of many young girls, thanks to a nose job in the pretty boy’s past. Dr. Sherrell J. Aston says, “It shows the advantage of a rhinoplasty performed well and at the right time for a young man before the height of his celebrity.”

8. Katherine Heigl — One of the more controversial stars of television show Gray’s Anatomy, Katherine Heigl has had breast implants, which seem to have helped augment her career. It was a job well-done as they do not seem obviously fake and fit her frame well. Dr. John Di Saia says, “Breast implantation looks pretty likely here, as the recent images I have seen feature a much fuller breast than previously, with a typical implant shape.”
9. Marissa Miller — Sports Illustrated model has some of the best breast implants around as they are so good that many think they are real. It is possible that they are natural, but incredibly unlikely given their large size on the model’s slim frame. She may have also had them lifted as their largeness makes them likely to sag and likely also had a nose job in the past to get that perfect nasal tip shape.

10. Britney Spears – The list would not be complete without her. The popstar has made a successful comeback this year and still looks good after having kids, thanks to some crafty plastic surgery. Early in her career, the singer had a rhinoplasty and since then has had a series of breast augmentations and liposuctions.

Honorable mentions:
1. Patrick Dempsey — After playing awkward teens in his youth, Patrick had a nose job that turned him into a handsome leading man.
2. Halle Berry—Halle’s beauty makes lists every year and thanks to some of the best plastic surgery around, including a nose job and breast augmentation, the new mother is sure to make lists for years to come.
3. Kim Kardashian – Kim had a good anti-cellulite treatment, but despite her protests, we still can’t tell if she had a boob job or not so her plastic surgery is still an enigma.
4. Elle MacPherson—Elle is still modeling after 40, thanks to some well-done plastic surgery, including a breast augmentation and/or a possible breast lift, laser cosmetic treatments like Fraxel, Affirm, or Active Fx as well as potential chemical peels and dermal fillers, like Botox, Restylane, and Juvederm. .
5. Christie Brinkley—A tumultuous personal life hasn’t kept Christie Brinkley from looking good. Some careful plastic surgery over the years, including the possibilities of a blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), a mini necklift, injectable fillers, like Restylane or Juvederm and some Botox has kept Christie camera ready at all times.
6. Olivia Newton John—Olivia Newton John is hopelessly devoted to some well-done plastic surgery, although her daughter has topped our list of the worst plastic surgery – she should have listened to mom…
Jared Leto showed off his unique interpretation of beachwear while on holiday in Miami today.
The rocker/actor was spotted hanging and strolling with some friends taking it easy before tonight’s big New Year’s Eve celebrations begin.
Jared was also seen with a mystery blonde following closely behind him, and witnesses say the two were spotted holding hands earlier today.
Perhaps Mr. Leto is starting off the new year with a new relationship?

Welcome (back) to the Hellmouth.
For seven years, Buffy and the Scooby gang kicked, punched and staked countless vampires (or should we say “undead Americans”?), demons, monsters, witches, zombies and other forces of darkness-y things. Buffy was a student by day, Slayer by night. As she once said, “If the apocalypse comes, beep me.”
We check in to see what the Scoobies, their friends and foes have been doing since their time in Sunnydale.
Sarah Michelle Gellar
Buffy Summers

Then: As a precocious child actress, Gellar became famous for bad-mouthing McDonald’s in a Burger King commercial. Later, she starred in teen drama ‘Swan’s Crossing’ and soap opera ‘All My Children’ as daytime diva Erika Kane’s (’Susan Lucci’) on-screen daughter Kendall. Two years after ‘AMC,’ Gellar took on the iconic role of Buffy Summers and staked a place in television history.
Now: Through ‘Buffy’’s run, Gellar starred in numerous movies including ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer,’ ‘Scream 2,’ ‘Cruel Intentions’ and the ‘Scooby Doo’ franchise, in which she starred alongside husband Freddie Prinze Jr. After the series ended, she continued her film career, often in horror movies like ‘The Grudge,’ but will return to television in HBOs’ ‘The Wonder Maladys’ in 2009.
Anthony Stewart Head
Rupert Giles

Then: Before playing Buffy’s Watcher, Head had a prolific TV career in his native Britain and the U.S., appearing as a regular on no fewer than two U.K. series and in guest spots on such BBC shows as ‘MI-5′ and ‘Jonathan Creek’ and American series ‘NYPD Blue,’ ‘Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place’ and ‘Fillmore!’ But he was best known in the States for a series of Nescafe coffee commercials.
Now: Head’s gone back across the pond; U.S. fans are most likely to have caught him on the cult hit comedy ‘Little Britain,’ as the Prime Minister; he had a blink-and-you’ll-miss-him part in Tim Burton’s ‘Sweeney Todd,’ and will next show up in the odd ‘Repo! The Genetic Opera’ and as Duncan in an updated version of ‘Macbeth.’
Alyson Hannigan
Willow Rosenberg

Then: Hollywood really is a small place: Hannigan’s first major movie role was in 1988’s ‘My Stepmother’s an Alien’ — also featuring her future on-screen boyfriend Seth Green. After appearances on ‘Picket Fences’ and ‘Roseanne,’ she won the role of Buffy’s nerdy best friend/powerful witch. Fun fact: Hannigan wasn’t the first Willow; Riff Regan played the part in the show’s pilot presentation.
Now: ‘Buffy’ not only helped Hannigan launch a movie career, with roles in the ‘American Pie’ franchise and ‘Date Movie’ — it introduced her to husband Alexis Denisof (who played Wesley Wyndham-Pryce). She returned to television first in a recurring role on ‘Veronica Mars,’ and currently stars in the comedy ‘How I Met Your Mother.’ The star and her husband are now expecting their first child.
Nicholas Brendon
Xander Harris

Then: Before his breakthrough role in ‘Buffy,’ you might have seen Brendon as “Guy in Ray-Ray’s Gang” in an episode of ‘Married … With Children’ or “Basketball Player One” in ‘Children of the Corn III’ — but probably not. Brendon leveraged his popularity to draw attention to stuttering, from which he’d suffered, by doing PSAs for the Stuttering Foundation of America. He also threw some work to his identical twin, actor Kelly Donovan, who played his seemingly evil twin in one ep and was his body double when Brendon was too sick to work.
Now: Reportedly, ‘Buffy’ creator Joss Whedon wanted Brendon for the role of Malcolm Reynolds on his other show ‘Firefly,’ but Brendon couldn’t fit it into his schedule, so the part went to Nathan Fillion. Since ‘Buffy’ ended, Brendon co-starred in the short-lived ‘Kitchen Confidential,’ voiced a character in ‘American Dragon: Jake Long,’ reunited with ‘Buffy’ co-star Charisma Carpenter in an ABC Family movie and had a story arc on ‘Criminal Minds.’
(I’m glad they chose my husband Nathan Fillion as Mal instead! As much as I love Nicholas, he probably couldn’t work it like Fillion did.)
Charisma Carpenter
Cordelia Chase

Then: The former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader had a story arc on ‘Malibu Shores’ before she appeared as Cordy, a snooty cheerleader who eventually became a core member of the ‘Buffy’-verse. She had a long and complicated romance with Xander and moved to L.A. to work as an investigator on ‘Angel,’ until she was written off in the show’s fifth season.
Now: Carpenter had a baby during the run of ‘Angel,’ and since, she’s been a TV-series regular, appearing on ‘Charmed,’ ‘Miss Match,’ ‘Veronica Mars,’ ‘Big Shots’ and the current show ‘Greek.’ She reunited with Nicholas Brendon in the 2006 ABC Family film ‘Relative Chaos.’
David Boreanaz
Angel

Then: Before ‘Buffy,’ Boreanaz was an uncredited extra in ‘Aspen Extreme’ and ‘Best of the Best 2,’ and guested on one ep of ‘Married … With Children.’ His Angel, a “reformed” vampire in league with the Slayer, was fans’ tall, dark and fang-some crush. When he lost his soul after consummating his love for Buffy, he really rocked the girls-who-like-the-bad-boys club.
Now: Boreanaz left Sunnydale for dark L.A. in his own spin-off, ‘Angel,’ and now stars as the FBI guy opposite brainiac forensic anthropologist ‘Bones’ in the Fox show. Again with the odd coupling — at least there’s no Gypsy curse on Seeley Booth, so if he and Temperance Brennan end up together, he won’t go rogue. We think.
(I’m a Spike girl through and through, but I’ve gotta say, he aged really well. Yum.)
Kristine Sutherland
Joyce Summers

Then: Sutherland had appeared in only a handful of roles before landing the plum part of Buffy’s long-suffering single mother. Before her season 5 death, Joyce was the mother figure for the Scooby gang and flirted with Rupert.
Now: Sutherland, her actor husband, John Pankow (’Mad About You’), and their daughter live a quiet life. She was last seen on screen in an episode of ‘New Amsterdam.’
(She’s such an underrated actress! GIVE THIS WOMAN WORK!)
James Marsters
Spike (YUM)

Then: The California-born Marsters played the spiky-haired leather-jacketed British vampire who went back (way back!) with Angel. He and Drusilla rode into town on a wave of bad attitude, but Spike fell in love with Buffy and — after some seriously hot, kinky hookups — got past her self-loathing and morphed into a valuable fighter of the good fight.
Now: Spike was a recurring character on ‘Angel,’ and Marsters played Ted Bundy in an ‘08 TV miniseries and pivotal baddie Milton Fine, aka Brainiac, on the Superman series ‘Smallville.’ On the big screen, he’ll appear in ‘Dragonball,’ based on the popular cartoon series.
Quakers Addition: He is also married to
sergeantquakers.
Emma Caulfield
Anya Jenkins

Then: Caulfield first came to fame playing a girlfriend on ‘Beverly Hills, 90210′ (hey, it worked for Hilary Swank), before moving on to ‘Buffy’ as demon Anyanka, the patron saint of scorned women. She came to wreak vengeance on Xander for cheating on Cordelia, but eventually fell in love and got engaged to him. Her Achilles heel (and running joke on the series): bunny-phobia.
Now: Caulfield notched a No.1 movie with ‘Darkness Falls,’ and appeared in ‘Monk,’ the TV movie ‘A Valentine Carol’ and some independent movies. She once revealed that she regretted passing on auditions for the roles of Number Six and Starbuck in ‘Battlestar Galactica.’ Currently, the actress blogs about politics on her MySpace page.
Seth Green
Daniel “Oz” Osbourne

Then: He was the sweet, wisecracking boy who broke Willow’s heart (but didn’t turn her gay) when he started hounddogging around with someone he had a lot more in common with — a female of the werewolf persuasion. Before ‘Buffy,’ Green was a prolific child actor who’d appeared in Woody Allen’s ‘Radio Days’ and on such shows as ‘The Facts of Life,’ ‘The Wonder Years’ and ‘The X-Files.’
Now: Green got his big break as Scott Evil, the disaffected son of Dr. Evil in the ‘Austin Powers’ movies. He’s a cult-comic hero, voicing Chris in ‘The Family Guy’ and creating ‘Robot Chicken,’ a hit on Comedy Central’s Adult Swim. He’s come full circle, back to lots of TV guest spots, on such series as ‘My Name Is Earl,’ ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Reno 911!’ Next on the big screen, he’s Amish in ‘Sex Drive.’
Michelle Trachtenberg
Dawn Summers (Boooo, hisssss)

Then: Before she appeared as Buffy’s mysterious younger sis in season 5, Trachtenberg was a hardworking kid actor, with a recurring role on ‘All My Children,’ as Harriet in ‘Harriet the Spy’ and a story arc on ‘The Adventures of Pete & Pete.’
Now: After ‘Buffy,’ Trachtenberg played a pop tart in a handful of episodes of ‘Six Feet Under’ and is currently a teen rhymes-with-witch on the CW’s buzz-worthy series ‘Gossip Girl.’ She’ll appear opposite Zac Efron in ‘17 Again’ at the multiplex.
Marc Blucas
Riley Finn

Then: As a basketball player, Blucas took the court alongside Tim Duncan at Wake Forest University. He transitioned from being a roundball star to playing one in the movie ‘Pleasantville.’ His acting career took off when he was cast as Agent Riley Finn, who worked for a secret government initiative and became Buffy’s boyfriend.
Now: Blucas’ work on ‘Buffy’ led to roles in ‘We Were Soldiers,’ ‘First Daughter,’ ‘The Alamo’ and ‘The Jane Austen Book Club.’ In addition to continuing his film and TV career, Blucas serves as an assistant coach for the Marymount High School girls’ basketball team.
Julie Benz
Darla

Then: Benz’s breakthrough role was as Angel’s ex Darla. Prior to her ‘Buffy’ appearances, she hadn’t had any recurring guest spots or major parts; after ‘Buffy,’ she had story arcs on ‘Ask Harriet,’ ‘Payne’ and ‘Roswell.’ Darla also had an important story line on ‘Angel.’
Now: She’s dating a monster again, this time it’s serial killer ‘Dexter’ Morgan on Showtime’s titular series. And not to mention that her ex-husband was an abusive drug addict. She really likes the bad boys. Benz also appeared in this year’s ‘Rambo’ and ‘Saw V’ and will be in the ‘Punisher’ remake.
Alexis Denisof
Wesley Wyndam-Pryce

Then: After appearing on stage and in the British series ‘Sharpe,’ Denisof moved to Los Angeles, but was so broke, he had to crash with friends — who just happened to be Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson. On ‘Buffy,’ he played a member of the Watchers Council who came to Sunnydale to manage Buffy and Faith. He failed miserably, but got a chance at redemption on ‘Angel.’
Now: Just before the final season of ‘Angel,’ Denisof was diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy. Recently, he guest-starred on ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ alongside wife and fellow ‘Buffy’ alum Alyson Hannigan.
Mercedes McNab
Harmony Kendall
Then: You rang? McNab’s first acting gig was small but memorable, as the Girl Scout in 1991’s ‘The Addams Family’ (she had a bigger role in the sequel, ‘Addams Family Values’). Harmony was originally just a member of Cordelia’s clique, but later became a vampire, hooked up with Spike and plotted to kill Buffy. She moved over to the spin-off, ‘Angel,’ eventually becoming a secretary at Wolfram & Hart.
Now: Since ‘Angel,’ McNab’s racked up numerous guest-starring spots on ‘Crossing Jordan,’ ‘Supernatural,’ ‘Reaper’ and ‘Psych,’ as well as roles in independent films, most (shockingly!) with a horror theme.
Amber Benson
Tara Maclay

Then: Gentle, generous Tara was Willow’s one true love; her murder turned Willow so evil that she could’ve destroyed the earth. Before Benson showed up on ‘Buffy,’ her career highlight might have been a role in ‘Can’t Hardly Wait,’ featuring fellow ‘Buffy’ alum Seth Green, except that her scene was deleted. Ouch.
Now: Benson’s appeared on ‘Cold Case’ and ‘Supernatural,’ in telemovies and straight-to-dvd releases. Well, at least her scenes haven’t been deleted. That’s something.
George Hertzberg
Adam (surprisingly hot when he’s not wearing Adam prosthetics)
Then: Hertzberg logged small parts in TV series including ‘3rd Rock From the Sun,’ ‘Home Improvement’ and ‘Providence’ before landing the role of part-human, part-demon, part-robot Adam, who was a creation of Professor Maggie Walsh.
Now: After ‘Buffy,’ Hertzberg continued acting in gigs on ‘All of Us’ and ‘Ghost Whisperer.’
Eliza Dushku
Faith Lehane

Then: Faith was a Slayer called up when Kendra was killed, but then she went evil after accidentally killing a human. For a while she was the Mayor’s right-hand gal, but she saw the light and turned herself in to atone for her sins on ‘Angel.’ During her ‘Buffy’ run, Dushku scored some plum movie parts, in such films as ‘Bring It On,’ ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’ and ‘City by the Sea.’
Now: Dushku headlined the supernatural series ‘Tru Calling’ and is working with Joss Whedon again in the upcoming sci-fi drama ‘Dollhouse.’
Clare Kramer
Glorificus
Then: Kramer honed her acting chops on the stage in productions including ‘The Miracle Worker’ before moving into films and television. Her first significant role came in ‘Bring It On’ (alongside fellow ‘Buffy’ star Eliza Dushku). She joined the ‘Buffy’ cast as hell-dimension god Glory, who wreaked havoc in season 5.
Now: Along with getting married and having a child, Kramer continued her acting career. She guest-starred on Dushku’s ‘Tru Calling,’ ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ and ‘House,’ and landed roles in movies including ‘The Rules of Attraction’ and ‘D.E.B.S.’
(How is it that she’s still getting work and Kristine Sutherland isn’t?! She was hilariously awful as Glory.)
Mark Metcalf
The Master
Then: He was the ubervillain of the first season, but before that he was already a seasoned TV guest star, most famously as the Maestro on ‘Seinfeld’; he also had guest spots on ‘Melrose Place,’ ‘Party of Five,’ ‘Touched by an Angel,’ ‘Miami Vice,’ ‘Hill Street Blues’ … even ‘Barnaby Jones.’ Of course, in his Master makeup, viewers couldn’t tell how old he was.
Now: His career’s slowed down since ‘Buffy’; he’s averaged less than a movie a year since his story arc ended in ‘02.
Juliet Landau
Drusilla
Then: The daughter of acclaimed actor Martin Landau landed her first role in ‘Pump Up the Volume,’ followed not long after by a role in ‘Ed Wood’ alongside her father. On ‘Buffy’ and ‘Angel,’ she was the mad vampire Drusilla, who was sired by Angelus. She sired Spike and the two were a devoted couple for more than a century.
Now: Landau continues acting in theater and independent movies, and recently directed a short documentary film about Gary Oldman. She also voices characters on the animated series ‘Ben 10.’
Harry Groener
Mayor Richard Wilkins III
He’s the dude, obviously.
Then: Mayor Wilkins actually founded Sunnydale and built it on the hellmouth as part of his demonic pact for eternal life. Groener had a long and busy TV career before ‘Buffy,’ including a regular gig on ‘Dear John’ and guest roles on ‘Mad About You’ (featuring Kristine Sutherland’s hubby John Pankow), ‘Home Improvement,’ ‘Star Trek: Next Generation’ and ‘Voyager,’ ‘Charmed’ and many more.
Now: He hasn’t slowed down since ‘Buffy,’ with a recurring role on ‘Las Vegas,’ multi-ep guest spots on ‘The West Wing,’ ‘Dr. Vegas,’ ‘Las Vegas’ and ‘Enterprise.’
Danny Strong
Jonathan Levinson
Then: After majoring in theater at USC, Strong racked up roles in ‘Saved by the Bell: The New Class,’ ‘Seinfeld’ and the movie ‘Pleasantville’ before landing on ‘Buffy’ as a school outcast. In season 6, he, Warren Mears and Andrew Wells formed the Trio with the idea to take over Sunnydale. (They failed. He was killed by Andrew.)
Now: Strong had another memorable role, as Doyle McMasters (Paris Gellar’s boyfriend) on ‘Gilmore Girls.’ Though he continues to act, he also made a mark as a screenwriter with HBO’s ‘Recount,’ earning an Emmy nomination for his work. He also penned ‘The Crusaders,’ which is set to be directed by Gary Ross.
Tom Lenk
Andrew Wells
Then: The UCLA theater program graduate came to ‘Buffy’ as a replacement; when the show couldn’t get Tucker Wells’ portrayer back, they wrote Tucker’s geeky younger brother as part of the Trio. After murdering Jonathan as a blood sacrifice, Andrew redeemed himself, becoming an ancillary part of the Scooby gang. Later, he showed up on ‘Angel’ as a Watcher-in-training.
Now: In addition to guest spots on ‘Six Feet Under,’ ‘Joey,’ ‘How I Met Your Mother’ and ‘Eli Stone,’ Lenk toured with the European production of ‘Grease’ and is an aspiring playwright.
Quakers Addition: He also came out.
Ken Lerner
Principal Bob Flutie
Then: Poor Principal Flutie, he really was a good guy, but he only lasted the first half of the first season of ‘Buffy’ before he was eaten by possessed students. But don’t feel sorry for Lerner; even before ‘Buffy’ his career as a TV character actor was quite healthy — he had a recurring role on ‘Chicago Hope,’ multi-episode arcs on ‘L.A. Law’ and ‘Beverly Hills, 90210′ and parts in such movies as ‘The Running Man,’ ‘The Fabulous Baker Boys’ and ‘RoboCop 2.’
Now: Since his unfortunate end on ‘Buffy,’ Lerner’s continued to find a steady stream of work on both the small and big screens, in such hit shows as ‘Friends,’ ‘NYPD Blue,’ ‘The West Wing,’ ‘CSI’ and ‘Without a Trace’ and in small films like ‘The Ticket’ and ‘National Security.’
Elizabeth Anne Allen
Amy Madison
Then: Allen logged time on television shows including ‘Doogie Howser, M.D.,’ ‘Bull’ and ‘Family Law’ — and auditioned for the part of Buffy! — before taking the role of Willow’s friend. Amy, a powerful witch, appeared throughout the series’ run, but was best known for turning herself into a rat. Later, when Willow finally undid the spell, Amy enticed her friend over to black magic.
Now: Allen continues to work in television, with guest spots on ‘JAG’ and ‘Close to Home.’
Armin Shimerman
Principal Snyder
Then: Shimerman was already well known to fanboys, as Quark in ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’ before he was the dictatorial Principal Snyder. Snyder suffered a similar fate to that of his predecessor, Principal Flutie — he was eaten alive. But with two major differences: 1) it was the mayor-turned-monster who devoured him (instead of a pack of possessed students), and 2) Snyder totally deserved his fate. He was Mayor Wilkins’ lackey, after all.
Now: Shimerman’s odd, unconventional looks and distinctively pinched voice have served him well for steady work since ‘Buffy,’ as both a character and vocal actor — he’s a recurring character on ‘Grim & Evil’ and ‘Boston Legal,’ and been in ‘Numb3rs,’ ‘Invasion,’ ‘Justice League’ and ‘Ben 10,’ among others.
Bianca Lawson
Kendra
Then: As a child, Lawson began acting in commercials before graduating to roles on ‘Saved by the Bell: The New Class’ and ‘Sister, Sister.’ After allegedly turning down the role of Cordelia Chase, she showed up on ‘Buffy’ in season 2, when Buffy died (briefly) and a new Slayer, Kendra, was called up — causing the unprecedented existence of two Slayers at once. At the end of the season, she was killed (calling up another Slayer, Faith).
Now: Lawson moved on to another WB show, as the school principal’s daughter on ‘Dawson’s Creek’ (who gives Dawson a run for his movie-making money), then to movies and TV shows including ‘Save the Last Dance’ and ‘Breakin’ All the Rules.’
(I don’t know about acting, but omfg, she was gorgeous.)
Adam Busch
Warren Meers
Then: When we first meet Warren, he’s a harmless nerd … who builds a sex-bot (he later built the Buffybot for sad Spike), but he becomes a darker character and it’s he who kills Tara, triggering Willow’s turn to the dark side. Busch began his career as a child, with a part in Luc Besson’s film ‘The Professional’ (which also gave another young actress her start, Natalie Portman) and a regular gig ‘The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo.’
Now: Busch has continued to work in movies and television, as a regular in the short-lived supernatural series ‘Point Pleasant,’ in guest spots on ‘House M.D.’ and ‘Back to You,’ and as a Jewish pop star wannabe in the underrated ‘06 big screen comedy ‘American Dreamz.’
(Quakers Addition: He’s also dating Amber Benson. Weird, considering he killed her in the show.)
Kali Rocha
Halfrek
Then: The prolific actress had quite the resume before ‘Buffy,’ with roles in ‘The Crucible,’ ‘The Object of My Affection’ and ‘Autumn in New York.’ Her most memorable gig, though, was as a flight attendant who spars with Ben Stiller in ‘Meet the Parents.’ On ‘Buffy,’ she played Anya’s fellow vengeance demon, who later died as a sacrifice to bring back a group of human men.
Now: Rocha reprised her role in ‘Meet the Fockers,’ and continued working in TV series including ‘Will & Grace,’ ‘Teachers,’ ‘Law & Order: SVU’ and ‘Boston Legal.’ But her most memorable television role post-’Buffy’ is as Dr. Sydney Heron, an extremely perky surgical resident on ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’
D.B. Woodside
Principal Robin Wood
Then: High school principal was his day job, but Wood was in reality out for vengeance for the death of his mother, a Slayer killed by Spike. Before ‘Buffy,’ he’d been a regular on crime dramas ‘Murder One’ and ‘The Division.’
Now: Woodside is probably best known as ‘24′’s Wayne Palmer, brother to David, the first black U.S. President; Wayne went on to succeed his sibling to become the second black U.S. President. Obama should be proud.
Lindsay Crouse
Professor Maggie Walsh
Then: Crouse had a long and prestigious film career, with an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for 1985’s ‘Places in the Heart’ and a buzzed-about role in then husband David Mamet’s ‘House of Games.’ before she appeared on ‘Buffy’ as the Dr. Frankenstein-like Walsh who headed up the Syndicate and created a monster who ultimately killed her.
Now: She’s continued to work steadily since ‘Buffy,’ and primarily on TV, with guest spots in such shows as ‘Providence,’ ‘Frasier,’ ‘Alias,’ ‘CSI,’ ‘Law & Order’ and ‘Criminal Minds.’
Nathan Fillion
Caleb

Then: His smirky good looks masked horrific evil — Caleb ordered the deaths of dozens of girls who might be watchers and the bombing of the Watchers’ Council Headquarters. Prior to ‘Buffy,’ Fillion was a regular on ‘Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place,’ alongside fellow Canuck Ryan Reynolds.
Now: Whedon cast him as the lead in his short-lived sci-fi Western ‘Firefly’ and the underrated big-screen version ‘Serenity.’ He’s shown up on high profile shows too — in one episode of ‘Lost’ and as a recurring character for one season of ‘Desperate Housewives.’ He’s working with Whedon again, on the hilarious web series ‘Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.’
Quakers Addition: He is also married to
sergeantquakers.
Iyari Limon
Kennedy (DOUBLE BOOOOO, DOUBLE HISSSSSS)
Then: Kennedy was an assertive rich girl, a potential Slayer who wasn’t shy about making her interest in Willow known. She helped keep Willow grounded during the final battle and was one of the potentials made into a full-fledged Slayer by her lover’s magic. Prior to ‘Buffy,’ the Mexico native had appeared in multiple episodes of ‘MTV’s Undressed.’
Now: After guesting in mainstream series ‘The Drew Carey Show’ and ‘Without a Trace,’ Limon’s resume has dwindled; her last two credited roles are in video games. What would Willow say?
Joss Whedon
Creator/executive producer
Then: A third-generation screenwriter (grandpa John wrote for ‘The Donna Reed Show’ and dad Tom wrote for ‘The Golden Girls’), Whedon started out on ‘Roseanne,’ before becoming a film “script doctor.” Years after penning the movie script for the cult fave ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ he transformed it into a television series that lasted seven seasons, spawned a spin-off (’Angel’), made his career and exerted lasting influence on popular culture. And all because he didn’t like the movie. (We did — not that we’re complaining.)
Now: After five seasons of ‘Angel,’ Whedon created the sci-fi show ‘Firefly’; thanks to fan outcry, the series, though short-lived, became the basis of a movie called ‘Serenity’. He continued expanding the “Buffyverse” with a season 8 comic book, and produced a web-only musical, ‘Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog’ during the ‘07/’08 writers’ strike. Whedon returns to television in January 2009 with ‘Dollhouse,’ starring ‘Buffy’ alum Eliza Dushku.
