Doctor Who star David Tennant has emerged for the first time since undergoing surgery to correct a back problem.

The 37-year-old looked the picture of misery as he took in some gentle exercise by walking to his local Post Office in East London.

Tennant, who is recovering after an operation for a slipped disc last week, was forced to temporarily pull out of his role as Hamlet in a Royal Shakespeare Company production due to the injury and is desperate to return to the stage ‘as quickly as possible’.

Wearing jeans, a multi-coloured scarf and black glasses, the Scottish actor bore more than a passing resemblance to fictional wizard Harry Potter.

Last week he said that his enforced absence from the critically acclaimed performance was ‘hugely disappointing’ and praised his understudy Edward Bennett, who stepped into the role just hours before opening night.

‘My back problem has progressed to the point where it is currently impossible for me to carry on without surgery.

‘I want to get back on stage as quickly as possible and I am very grateful to Ed who has courageously got to grips with the role but in a much shorter time. It’s a fantastic achievement.’

Previews of the play started on December 3 at London’s Novello Theatre.

It is understood that Tennant struggled along with the back pain - which has been a long standing condition - because he did not want to let audiences down.

His huge popularity as Doctor Who meant that the show, which runs until January 10 was sold out.

He was forced to pull out two weeks ago because his condition deteriorated.

Later, a spokesman for the Royal Shakespeare Company confirmed the actor would not return to the stage ‘before Christmas’.

Tennant recently revealed that he was quitting his role as Dr Who at the end of next year, ending months of speculation over his future.

‘I’ve had the most brilliant, bewildering and life-changing time working on Doctor Who. I have loved every day of it,’ he said at the National Television Awards.

‘I feel very privileged to have been part of this incredible phenomenon, and whilst I’m looking forward to new challenges I know I’ll always be very proud to be the Tenth Doctor.’

Will Young spied on his neighbour having sex with a sofa.

The British pop star discovered the man’s bizarre fetish after going up to the roof of his London home shortly after he moved in.

He told fans during his concert at London’s Roundhouse venue on Friday (12.12.08): “When I first moved into my house a few years ago, I climbed onto the roof to have a look at the view and I could see this guy who looked like he was having sex on his sofa.

“So I texted my friend, you know, ‘Come up and have a look at this’, and I sat and watched for a bit. And then he got up and there was nothing there. He’d been humping the sofa.

“I won’t be going round and sitting in that chair, you don’t know what he’s done to it!”

Will was reminded of the unusual incident after a fan threw a snowman onto the stage. Upon noticing a lipstick mark on it, he joked: “Someone’s been lonely!”

The 29-year-old singer ended his 2008 ‘Let It Go’ tour with a crowd-pleasing set which included tracks from across his six-year career, including early favourites ‘You and I’ and ‘Your Game’ and last single ‘Grace’.

Tom Cruise named in scientology lawsuit

Tom Cruise is named in a federal lawsuit against the Church of Scientology. Peter Letterese, a longtime critic of the church of scientology, filed suit in Florida on July 15.

Letterese called the church a “crime syndicate” and wants it broken up under the RICO law (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization). He claims that he was harassed by chuch and that Tom Cruise is the right hand man of David Miscavage, the head of the Church of Scientology.

Shia Labeouf was involved in an accident over the weekend and was arrested for dui shortly afterwards. Witnesses say Labeouf was making a left turn and was struck by another vehicle that ran the red light. Officers on the scene said he was clearly intoxicated. 22 year old Labeouf sustained minor injuries to his knee and hand during the wreck.
